Lollapalooza is one of the most iconic festivals in the world. Its first edition was organized in 1991 by singer Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band, Jane’s Addiction. Originally, the festival toured around the USA, but in 2005 it settled in Chicago’s Grant Park. Since 2010, international sister festivals have sprung up in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Berlin and Paris. However, the American version will always remain the original one.
Grant Park is located right in the centre of Chicago, between the city’s characteristic skyscrapers and Lake Michigan. On its eight stages, the festival hosts more than 170 artists. The lineup includes the biggest rock, indie, pop and hip hop stars, but also a great variety of upcoming talent. Apart from the music, Lollapalooza offers a colourfully decorated site and a food selection that will make your mouth water, focussing on fresh foods from Chicago’s favourite restaurants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to the festival?
Lollapalooza’s festival site is easily accessible, as it is located right in the centre of Downtown Chicago. Public transport will take you there from basically anywhere in the city. The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) has a trip planner with real-time travel information.
If you are coming from further away, Chicago has two major airports: O’Hare International and Midway International. Both airports can be reached with public transport, but Go Airport Express also offers discounted airport transfers for Lolla attendees.
For when you are in a particularly active mood, Lollapalooza offers bicycle parking just outside the main entrance.
Is there a festival campsite?
No, unfortunately not! As the festival site is right in the centre of Downtown Chicago, there is really no space for a festival campsite. However, Lollapalooza offers several hotel packages.
If you are looking for something a bit less fancy, Chicago has numerous hostels and Airbnbs. Because of the quality of public transport and the central location of the festival site, it is not a problem if your accommodation is not within a five-minute walk.
