Off the radar: Will we see Stromae at festivals again?

Stromae is one of the most famous Belgian musicians of the last decade. However, his last concert was in 2015 and he doesn’t seem to want to come back. At least, not immediatly.

Who is Stromae?

Paul Van Haver, aka Stromae, is a Belgian singer-songwriter and producer. He started his musical career as a rapper at the beginning of the millenium, while simultaneously working and studying. It is only around 2010 that he becomes famous with his hit ‘Alors On Danse’ from the album Cheese, despite the song being in French. He even worked with Kanye West on a remix. However, Cheese was only the prelude, and Stromae becomes an international sensation with his album Racine Carrée., which includes the hits ‘Formidable’ and ‘Papaoutai’. His live shows are incredible and his fanbase is growing, but, in 2015, he decides to stop.

What is he up to now?

Stromae most probably faced a burnout. Too much pressure, too big concerts, including shows at Glastonbury, Sziget and Rock Werchter. His last concert in the country of his father also must have been a difficult experience. However, this was for the best, as his mental and physical health are what matter. After his last show, he got married, spent time with his family and friends and dedicated his time to a line of clothing, mosaert (and fashion in general).

Will Stromae come back?

Maybe as Stromae, maybe with another alias. But last year, we got a surprise new song from him as advertisement of his fashion label. It’s an amazing 9 minutes song that sounds like him yet is very fresh. He even came back on stage in 2018, to accompany Orelsan on a song. He said it himself, the creativity is still here. But will he come back as Stromae? “In five, ten or twenty years, if I miss it”. It’s been two years since that interview, so will we see him in three years? Time will tell, but we would be delighted.
