In less than a month the small village of Landgraaf will host the 50th edition of Pinkpop: the timetable is online and thankfully the headliners won’t clash with anyone, but the bands at the second stage (IBA Parkstad Stage) and the tent (Brightslands Stage) will play at pretty much the exact same time. These are the five clashes we have spotted.
Pinkpop is the oldest pop and rock music festival in the world and this year will take place from 8 to 10 June. His founder, Jan Smeets, offers every year a well mixed lineup; this year headliners will be The Cure, Fleetwood Mac and Mumford & Sons.
Saturday: Cage The Elephant vs. Davina Michelle
Cage The Elephant (IBA Parkstad Stage 17.00-18.00) is an American rock band greatly appreciated all over the world. Social Cues is their fresh new album released on 19 April and boasts a collaboration with Beck. The singer Matt Shultz is a real showman and for sure will engage the whole crowd.
On the other hand in the tent, Davina Michelle (Brightlands Stage 17.05-17.50) has the home court advantage. The young Dutch singer and Youtuber will fill the tent with her great voice. She has been known for some very well done cover posted on her Youtube channel and now she is a rising star of Dutch music.
Sunday: White Lies vs. Blood Red Shoes
London post-punk band White Lies (IBA Parkstad Stage 13.45-14.45) will do their fifth appearance at Pinkpop. Five is also the name of their fifth studio album released 1 February last year. White Lies are very famous in Holland so be aware that their concert will be a real blast.
Meanwhile on the other side of the festival you will find Blood Red Shoes (Brightlands Stage 13.45-14.45). British indie-rockers will bring their new album Get Tragic to Landgraaf. This will be their third time at Pinkpop. The band from Brighton will play their energetic show in the early afternoon, get ready to some good alternative rock.
Sunday: Die Antwoord vs. Mark Ronson
We are talking about one of the most controversial bands of the last years: Die Antwoord (IBA Parkstad Stage 20.00-21.00) will bring zef-culture to the second stage of Pinkpop. The South-African band plays a mix of hip hop, electronic music and fat bass: their shows are always like parties and Yolandi and Ninja know how to make the crowd jump and move.
Mark Ronson (Brightlands Stage 20.00-21.00) is the excellence of producers: during his long career he has done collaboration with artists such as Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Queens Of the Stone Age, Bruno Mars. The british musician will play songs from his upcoming album Late Night Feelings that will be published next June.
Monday: Tenacious D vs. The Pretenders
One of the funniest acts on the bill is the American comedy rock duo Tenacious D (IBA Parkstad Stage 16.20-17.20). Jack Black and Kyle Gass will play an hour long concert of irreverent acoustic rock. The duo that has a long time collaboration with Dave Grohl, will perform songs especially from their last album Post-Apocalypto.
The Pretenders (Brightlands Stage 16.20-17.20) are a real legendary band. Chrissie Hynde and her band will do one of their few festival appearances of 2019 at Pinkpop: if you are an old-school rocker you should not miss them.
Monday: Major Lazer vs. Michael Kiwanuka
On Monday evening we will find another great producer of our times: Diplo and his creature Major Lazer (IBA Parkstad Stage 20.20-21.20) will smash the second stage. Even if Major Lazer’s sound has changed from the first records we are sure that crazy dancers, fire and well known songs remixed will not fail.
Lastly, Michael Kiwanuka (Brightlands Stage 20.20-21.20) will bring his intimate soul and funk music to the tent stage. Kiwanuka is a British songwriter who began his career supporting Adele but nowadays he is a successful singer and guitarist. He has released two studio albums and has been nominated for numerous honors including Brit Awards and Mercury Prize.
