Summer festivals would not be as exciting without several months to speculate about which artists will take the stage this year. At Festileaks we always keep an eye out for rumours. In this article, we ask ourselves: who will we see at Sziget 2019?

Last year, Sziget impressed the crowd with its wonderful atmosphere as well as headliners Kendrick Lamar, Gorillaz, Mumford & Sons, Dua Lipa, Kygo and Arctic Monkeys. Will the Hungarian festival be able to bring a lineup that is just as impressive in 2019? We have gathered all the potential headliners for this year’s edition. So far, six have been announced: Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters, Florence + the Machine, The 1975, Martin Garrix and Post Malone.

This is the list of the main rumours (in random order).

Tame Impala

Tame Impala only did a few festival shows last summer. Kevin Parker also said that he is busy working on the new album. The frontman of Tame Impala mentioned it will most likely be released before the summer of 2019. Usually, this means that a series of festival shows will follow. Indeed, they already confirmed appearances at Hurricane & Southside, Primavera Sound and august festivals like Lowlands, Pukkelpop and more. The Australians might just add Sziget to their list as they are already performing across Europe.

The National

One of the most critically acclaimed bands in the world, they will have a busy festival season again this summer. Amongst others, The National were the first announced name for Mad Cool in July 2019. The Americans have also confirmed festivals in August, including Ypsigrock, Summer Well and Paredes de Coura. It is therefore certain that the famous alternative rock band is in Europe around Sziget. Of course, the Hungarian festival could be a good option.

Ellie Goulding

Ellie is one of the pop stars who could be the last headliner of Sziget 2019. She has already headlined the festival in 2016 and has been announced for Parkenfestivalen and Jugendfest in August. Her last album, Delirium, was out in 2015, so she will probaby be back with a new one to promote this summer.

Travis Scott

Travis Scott is still enjoying the success of his hit album Astroworld, which was released on 3 August 2018. It is clear that the American artist will take the record around a few festivals this year, as he has already been confirmed for Roskilde and Open’er 2019. Considering the musical diversity of the Sziget lineup, Travis Scott would be a good choice for this year’s edition of the Hungarian festival as well.

Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals

Another rapper who we can spot at the top of some bills this summer is Anderson .Paak! August festivals have the most chances to book him as he is already confirmed for Reading & Leeds as well as Lowlands Festival. Before coming to Europe in the summer, the American artist and his band will also perform at Coachella and Boston Calling 2019.

The Cure

The Cure will surely have a busy summer festival season in 2019. They have already confirmed playing at several European festivals, including Rock Werchter, Mad Cool, NOS Alive and August festivals like Flow and Øya. The English band is also set to release a new album this year. It will be their first one in more than a decade and it would not be surprising if they end up headlining at Sziget, one of the biggest festivals in Europe. If they would, they would be returning after 17 years.

Swedish House Mafia

Swedish House Mafia confirmed in a press conference that they will be back on stage in 2019. So far, the EDM supergroup has been confirmed for FM4 Frequency, Creamfields, Tinderbox and Stavernfestivalen. Moreover, Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso will also release new music. A reunion like this would be a good match for a prominent spot on the lineup of Sziget 2019.

Royal Blood

The British rock duo are very likely to play Sziget. They have been announced for all the major August festivals: Lowlands, Pukkelpop, Reading & Leeds and Rock en Seine. Furthermore, they fit the lineup and could certainly (co-)headline a day.

The Strokes

The Strokes

In January 2018, The Strokes‘ frontman Julian Casablancas declared that the band will return in 2019. Moreover, the band might even release an album this year. Of course, this would be a great time for headline slots at some major European festivals, including Sziget. After all, they have never played at Budapest’s festival before. The first tour announcements revealed two Spanish performances at Doctor Music Festival and Bilbao BBK.

Childish Gambino

Maybe this is the last year that you will be able to see Childish Gambino. In fact, Donald Glover will surely continue to make music but probably under another name. The American rapper is already confirmed to headline Coachella, but European festivals are still very much a mystery. There are many festivals where he could play, apart from Lovebox and Bilbao BBK where he performed last year.

Sziget Festival is one of the largest music festivals in Europe which is held every August in northern Budapest. It started in 1993 as a festival for students and quickly attracted a more international audience. Since then, Sziget has won the European Festival Award of Best Line-up twice, in 2014 and 2017; for it is not the headliners that make the festival but rather its variety of musical genres.
