1. Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam chooses quality over quantity: only five European festival shows were planned this year. The first European festival show of 2018 took place at Pinkpop: after eighteen years, the band finally returned to Landgraaf. Frontman Eddie Vedder is wearing his green Tivoli t-shirt and remembers the legendary concert and stagedive of 1992.

A few weeks later, it is Rock Werchter’s turn. Vedder surprises by going on stage early: he joins Jack Johnson for the song ‘Constellations’. Returning the favour, Jack Johnson later joins Pearl Jam for a rendition of ‘Imagine’. But this is not all: MC5 cover ‘Kick Out the Jams’ is played with the help of MC5’s Wayne Kramer, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and members of King’s X and Fugazi. Legendary.

The band really does everything to make their festival shows a memorable experience. A solid rock act that has been going strong for 28 years: you cannot get enough of it. Pearl Jam were included in almost 31% of your top 10 lists, and they are the undisputed festival kings of 2018!

2. Gorillaz

Every Gorillaz show was guaranteed to include some surprises. Several special guests (De La Soul, Jamie Principle, Little Simz) joined the band on stage, frontman Albarn chanted the name of football player Eden Hazard at Rock Werchter, and he performed a tribute to Aretha Franklin at Lowlands. You would almost forget this, but this was only Gorillaz’ first festival tour. And that for an act that broke through in the 00s!

3. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

He nailed the sunset slot at Down the Rabbit Hole and conquered Rock Werchter; Nick Cave had a very good summer. In an interview with Festileaks (in Dutch), Dick van Dijk (Plato/Concerto) describes the ‘Cave experience’ as follows: “…he moves you and gets it from his deepest self. There is also no other artist who plays the crowd this well. He waltzes right through. Touches and lets himself be touched. And that in a very relaxed way that doesn’t distract. Really very special.” Clearly, you agreed, giving Nick Cave a third place in the ultimate list of 2018.
