Rock Werchter is happening next week, finally. The festival season has been going for a while now, but Rock Werchter is a true landmark. Here is our top five clashes at the Belgian festival.
1. Thursday: Gorillaz vs. Triggerfinger
First day, first big clash involving two stage closers. It might seem an easy choice for international festival goers, but Triggerfinger (Klub C, 00h00-01h05) is a good choice for rock fans and they play a home game, so if the last Gorillaz (Main Stage, 00h15-01h45) albums do not appeal to you, you may want to check out the Belgian band.
2. Friday: Snow Patrol vs. Chvrches
Two great bands playing at the same time. Chvrches (Klub C, 19h15-20h15) represents the indie-synth movement very well, even if their last album has been kind of a let down. On the other side, there is Snow Patrol (Main Stage, 19h15-20h15), who have not been very active these past years, but are coming back with a new album. This is a choice between good dance music and a set filled with hits.
3. Friday: London Grammar vs. Franz Ferdinand
This one is also an easy choice if you have a favourite, because one is calm while the other is clearly more rock-oriented. London Grammar (Main Stage, 21h15-22h30) are an English band revolving around the voice of Hannah Reid. Their music is soft, with some small electronic hints. Franz Ferdinand (Klub C, 21h15-22h15) are an indie rock band. Dancing and singing to festival evergreen ‘Take Me Out’ might be too appealing to miss them.
4. Saturday: Jack White vs. Petit Biscuit
Again, another easy choice for international festival goers. Jack White (Main Stage, 20h40-22h10) will play songs of his own as well as White Stripes classics (I’m looking at you, ‘Seven Nation Army’). If you are not into this, try to catch Petit Biscuit (KluB C, 21h00-22h00), an electronic artist from the new French wave.
5. Sunday: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds vs. Rone
The clash you probably won’t know about, as Rone (Klub C, 18h45-19h45) is not really famous outside of his home country, France. However, this is an electronic artist you should check out. He has one famous song, which is awesome, but his discography extends to even better music, and his live shows are well-crafted. Noel Gallagher (Main Stage, 19h10-20h10) is a safe and excellent choice if you are not into electronic music, as he will sing songs from his solo career, as well as Oasis songs everyone knows. You could also take into account that Noel and Nine Inch Nails overlap a bit.
Rock Werchter 2018
In 1974, Rock Werchter started as a one-day festival. With almost 90,000 visitors each day and around 80 bands for its four-day lineup, it is now one of the biggest festivals in Europe. Through its 44 years, it has hosted a variety of music genres and artists. From Metallica and Iron Maiden to David Bowie and Paul McCartney, all have performed at the Belgian festival.
